Background to Local TV in the UK

The UK Government announced in July 2011 that it is creating the opportunity for local TV licences to be awarded through a competitive selection process run by Ofcom. The service will be delivered by a digital terrestrial signal to around 65 towns and cities across the UK. See Potential UK Locations. Belfast and Derry/Londonderry are listed.

In the recently published document, ‘A new framework for local TV in the UK’, Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, stated,

“The Government is enabling a new local TV market to emerge on a scale never achieved before.”

“I am confident this will manifest itself into a new opportunity for businesses, for communities and for audiences as a whole.”

“This is only the beginning: …We want to get new local TV services on the Freeview platform… we want to see these pioneer services enabling the transition within the market for local TV to reach across the UK on internet protocol television (IPTV).”

“I encourage you to start thinking about how you will respond to the proposals set out here and be a part of the vision for local TV.”
